THE DYNAMIC THEATRE
Our standard workshop, unless otherwise requested, is focused on the principles of physical acting. Specifically, this includes the study of movement, gesture, articulations, attitudes, focus and the use of space. Workshops are available for specific interests such as Mask Performance, Movement, Theatre of Gesture, Melodrama, Commedia dell’arte, Ensemble-created work, Clown Theatre, and Physical Comedy as well as in-service workshops for teachers.
WHO WAS THAT MASKED WOMAN?
Joan Schirle shares a lifetime of mask play and research into world mask traditions. Her lively lecture-demonstration features an extensive collection of masks from Bali, Italy, Japan, China, and many other sources, even the dumpster. From the origins of masks to their role in theater, film, religions, and tribal societies, she bridges the worlds of spirits, social masks, demons and disguises, revealing the transformative power of these powerful and playful objects. Your audience will enjoy seeing everyday objects become masks, as well as handling some extraordinary art works by master mask carvers.
Joan Schirle, Dell’Arte’s Founding Artistic Director and director of the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre from 2000 - 2010, has offered hundreds of workshops and residencies all over the world. Joan was recently recognized with one of the first TCG/Fox Foundation fellowships for “Distinguished Achievement in Theatre,” and was invited to Beijing in 2012 to teach physical acting.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN – The Dell’Arte Journey
Dell’Arte Producing Artistic Director, Michael Fields takes you around the world and down the block, with 30 years of stories and video, about devising and playing original theatre and then hitting the road from world capitals like Venice, Budapest and Bogota to rural bastions of culture like Forks of Salmon and Burnt Ranch. The saga of the road and how the journey of one company affected the course of ensemble, physical and actor created theatre in the United States and around the world. Dell’Arte has been to the desert on a horse with no name and managed to make it home. Funny, fierce, and physical, this is a lecture demo road show like none other you have seen. Life is, indeed, a highway.
Michael Fields, has been a member of the Dell’Arte ensemble for 35 years. He is has been the recipient of numerous San Francisco and San Diego Critics Circle awards for performance and has directed nationally and internationally. He also served as president of the International Theatre Institute for the USA.
OUT OF MARTHA’S HOUSE
An informal and provocative mixture of story, reflection, and video,
Out of Martha’s House is a deeply moving and at times hysterically funny accounting of life with Martha Graham, her dances and “the tours”. Taken from Donlin Foreman’s journals during the last years of Martha’s life, this presentation exposes an intimate dance with pain and suffering, with doubt and terror, with courage, conviction, determination, and a resilient sense of humor. In all, an
affirmation of the human spirit that embodies the passionate quest of any true artist.
Donlin Foreman toured for 20 years as a principal dancer in the Martha Graham Company. By the time Martha died, Donlin had performed all of the major male roles in her repertory.
A NOSE BY ANY OTHER NAME WOULD SMELL
World renowned clown teacher and Director of the School at Dell’Arte International,
Ronlin Foreman engages the audience in an evening of delight: the Clown and the Fool … and the unmasking of the sources of comedy. This lecture performance (with video) features an eccentric arrangement of vignettes on the theatre: the act of training, the nature of Art and state of Play. Fear, failure, and shame engaged to find delight, resilience and laughter.
Ronlin trained in Mime and Physical Theatre Styles at The Valley Studio and was trained in Performance/Theatre Dynamics at L’Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris, France.
