Philip Gerstner Instructor, Tai Chi & Archery
Philip is a certified teacher of the FM Alexander Technique and an instructor of Tai Chi and Archery. Philip has spent most of his life working with his hands as a farmhand, commercial fisherman, boat builder, woodworker, small-craft sailor and other trades. After suffering repetitive strain injuries, he began to think that there might be something more to know about these things. Joan Schirle provided an introduction to the Alexander Technique and also encouraged him to investigate the martial arts. Continuing to study with Joan, he attended seminars with Frank Ottiwell, Michael Frederick and others, and went on to attend the Alexander Foundation where he received his teaching certificate from directors Bruce Fertman and Martha Fertman in 1995. Philip has studied Wu-style Long Form Tai chi with Margaret Emmerson; Yang-style Short Form with Bruce and Martha Fertman, and Yang-style Long Form and Chinese Boxing with Sifu Paul Gale; Aikido with Sensei's Tom Reed, Yukio Utada and others; Contact Improvisation with Jim Creekhouse and Jackie McCormack. He teaches Alexander Technique in private practice. Philip’s highest award is one that he did not receive: scars from carpal tunnel release surgery. |
